Using Life Style Products – Evaluating a Nutritional Supplement

Dr. Greg A. Brown, University of Nebraska, USA

Like many of the others who have designed effective strategies to teach for thinking,  Dr. Greg Brown stages this exercise, first talking with students about the strategy that will be used (a SOAP note) to analyze the class material(advertisements about nutritional supplements). Then, once the strategy is understood, it is practiced, evaluated and then practiced again. Most importantly there is a debriefing of the process that includes a specific discussion about how students thought through the exercise and an expectation that they will be able to articulate the reasons behind their judgments. We really like this staged approach that guides students through an analysis and evaluation process on a content area where they are sure to have interest. Dr. Brown’s style of requiring his students to provide an explanation of their work is a model for teaching for thinking.
