Two Rubrics for Evaluating Writing

Conversations among faculty, all of whom teach the same subject, can lead to significant consensus in regard both to the learning outcomes they intend students to achieve and in regard to the qualitative standards to use in evaluating student work. These important agreements can be captured in rubrics or scoring guides that the faculty design and use. When these tools are shared with students, the result often is a clearer sense of the goals that the faculty have agreed are to be achieved, the development of a common language for talking about the material and the objectives of the course or program, and a more sophisticated appreciation of the standards that are going to be applied in evaluating the quality of the students' work.

As examples, here are two such rubrics for evaluating student writing. The first focuses on the craft of writing. The second is a guide for evaluating the development of a thesis and its support.
