Good thinkers are not only skilled at
analysis, inference, and evaluation,
but disposed to use those skills to make
reasoned judgments.

The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI)

Construct and Content Validity: The CCTDI is based on the conceptualization of critical thinking articulated in the Expert Consensus Statement on College Level Critical Thinking (1990) known as The Delphi Report. This concept was supported by an independent replication research study of policy-makers, employers, and academics which was conducted at Penn State University, sponsored by US Department of Education.

Scores Reported: The CCTDI Total Score targets the consistent internal motivation toward critical thinking. That is the disposition to use or not to use one's reasoning and reflective judgment when solving problems and making decisions. The CCTDI returns these scores:

  • Overall disposition toward critical thinking total score.
  • Sub-scale scores on seven critical thinking dispositional attributes:
    truthseeking,

    open-mindedness,

    analyticity,

    systematicity,

    inquisitiveness,

    confidence in reasoning, and

    cognitive maturity
    .

Intended Subjects: The CCTDI is designed for college students, high school students, and adults. It has been most widely used with college and university students in all program areas and of all ages including community college students, traditional-age undergraduates, professional school masters and doctoral students, adult learners, continuing education students, college-prep high school students, and working professionals.

Purposes: The CCTDI has been used nationally and internationally for learning outcomes assessment, academic advising, program evaluation, professional development, training, psychological research, and an element in application, admissions, and personnel evaluation processes. With the CCTDI one can gather data on an individual's critical thinking dispositional profile and on the critical thinking dispositions of groups.
