Critical Thinking:
What It Is and Why It Counts -- 2007 Update
This
21 page essay, written by Dr. Peter ("Pete") Facione primarily
for students and the general public. This essay invites readers
to think about critical thinking, and in so doing it provides a
sound and research-based conceptual synthesis describing critical
thinking skills and dispositions. The emphasis in the essay, beyond
the definition developed, is on the personally and socially significant
uses of critical thinking. Civic engagement without critical thinking
may be nothing but noise, polemics, and political deception. This
2007 update expands the discussion of critical thinking by connecting
it with recent work in cognitive science. It includes a discussion
of several heuristic thinking strategies humans commonly use, including
their potential advantages and their inherent potential biases.
The essay talks about our two human problem-solving systems which
appear to operate in parallel; one being our more intuitive, reactive,
and holistic decision-making, and the other being our more reflective
and procedural and rule-governed. ©1992, 1998 2004, 2006, 2007

The
senior research associates of Insight Assessment have engaged in
the empirical and conceptual analysis of reasoning for decades.
In the late 1980's the focus was on articulating a broadly acceptable
and educationally meaningful definition of critical thinking. At
the same time, more than two decades of experience in the development
of valid and reliable reasoning skills tests culminated in the publication
of the California Critical Thinking Skills Test. Through the decade
of the 1990's the research expanded to the dispositional aspect
of reasoning and connection of critical thinking (skills and dispositions)
with professional judgment. The latest work of our team of researchers
focuses at both the empirical and the conceptual levels on the analysis,
assessment, and development of more effective human decision-making
in contexts of risk and uncertainty, a concern of every conscientious
professional and leader.
