CT: Prerequisite for Clinical Problem-solving
In 2010, at the Millennium Conference, sponsored by the Shapiro Institute and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and held in Wellesley, Massachusetts, medical school educators thought about thinking. Specifically, they discussed how best to teach critical thinking. Richard Schwartzstein, MD, the Vice President for Medical Education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, summarized the problem like this: “Critical thinking is a prerequisite of clinical problem-solving,” and went on to say that "making an accurate diagnosis, ordering the right tests or prescribing the right therapies are all rooted in the ability to think critically."
Because we agree, we have provided a platform for those who teach clinical reasoning well to share their best practices: "Critical Thinking and Clinical Reasoning in the Health Sciences: An International Multidisciplinary Teaching Anthology".
